5 Factor Diet

5 Factor Dietby Harley Pasternak, is a super-sized (256 pages in hardcopy) expansion of the dieting section of his 2004 book 5-Factor Fitness, which is based around the factor 5 - 5 meals a day, 5 workouts a week of 5 exercises each.

The book includes over 40 pages of recipes for sample meals.

The principles outlined are:

1. Eat 5 meals daily.
2. Follow the 5 criteria for each meal.
3. Spend 5 minutes in preparation for each meal, using only 5 ingredients.
4. Workout 25 minutes 5 days a week for 5 weeks.
5. Indulge in a weekly ‘cheat’ day.

5 ‘Fat-loss’ keys

1. Metabolism — faster metabolism burns more calories, hence less fat.
2. Exercise — stay in the fat-burning zone and build lean muscle.
3. Right calories — consume foods with the right kind and amount of calories.
4. Glycemic Index — low-GI foods keep blood-sugar levels steady.
5. Rest and recovery — promote growth hormone for muscle condition, and reduce cortisol (’stress’ hormone).

5 Criteria for each of 5 meals per day

1. Low-fat, quality protein
2. Low-GI carbohydrate
3. Fiber
4. Healthy fat
5. Sugar-free beverage

Sundays are considered a ‘cheat day’ - eat what you like, while sticking to the 5-meals principle.
Meal Guidelines
Breakfast

Sugar-free cereal with at least 5 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber per serving,(eg Kashi Go Lean!), with some fresh fruit like strawberries or blueberries. Use non-fat cottage cheese or sugar-free yogurt in place of cereal for a change.

For something warm, use egg whites as a base for a low-fat omelette, or try the Apple-Cinnamon Oatmeal Frittata.

For hot cereal, make some oatmeal and blend in a scoop of whey-protein powder.
Lunch

Soups & salads, with no-flour bread or tortilla for open sandwiches or wraps, or a rice cake.
Dinner

Lean chicken/steak/fish for protein, and fibrous, moderate-GI carbs in vegetables like wild rice, squash, sweet potato, broccoli, spinach, or cauliflower.

South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet plan was created by cardiologist Dr Arthur Agatston based at Mount Sinai Hospital - in South Florida. The diet was originally developed for overweight heart patients. The patients experienced excellent results, not only in their general health but also lost weight.

Three Phases
The South Beach Diet begins with a somewhat restricted two-week induction phase — generally producing weight loss of 8 to 13 pounds. In this phase most carbohydrates (such as rice, pasta, and breads) must be avoided. There are three meals a day and snacks — eating until your hunger is satisfied. Meats, shellfish, chicken, turkey, and fish are all on the menu - along with nuts, cheese (fat-free), eggs, salads, and vegetables.

There are two subsequent phases that include specific meal plans and recipes. The second phase reintroduces some of the foods avoided in Phase 1 - but only sparingly. In this phase weight loss should be in the region of 1-2 pounds per week.

The third phase is about living the lifestyle more than a phase - its about eating healthy foods, and maintaining weight.

This is NOT Atkins
Although the South Beach Diet may seem similar to the Atkins diet or the Zone diet, Dr Agatston stresses it is not a strictly low-carb diet. It’s all about balancing the good carbs against the “bad” carbs. Although when looking at the first 14-day phase - there is no doubt that this is a low-carb phase

South Beach Diet Summary

The South Beach Diet is nutritionally sound, however the more expensive food items could make the cost difficult to meet for some. Unfortunately good nutritious foods do tend to cost more than their highly-processed counterparts.

The Diet Solution

The Diet Solution was created by Isabel De Los Rios, a nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle coach based in New Jersey. De Los Rios says that her plan gives dieters a way to change eating habits for life, develop a long term eating strategy and not just modify the diet temporarily.

The Diet Solution is based on the principle of metabolic typing which categorizes dieters into three groups, each which has its own distinct dietary guidelines.

The Diet Solution Basics

The first thing dieters are advised to do is to set up the mind for success. You should spend some time thinking about what you want to achieve in regards to your health, your weight and your life, then write down specific goals and visualize yourself achieving them.

Dieters are informed that there are three steps that have to be followed in order to achieve their ideal weight.

* Eating in accordance with metabolic type.
* Staying within ideal calorie ranges.
* Consuming a variety of high quality food.

In order to determine metabolic type dieters undertake a series of questions. Dieters are then categorized as a protein, carb or mixed type. Each type requires ideal amounts and varieties of healthy proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Detailed meal plans are provided for each type.

Dieters are encouraged to rethink the idea of snacks and to choose nutritious alternatives such as raw nuts, boiled eggs, fruits and raw vegetables.

Dieters are also made aware of the dangers of hydrogenated fats and are advised to strictly eliminate any foods containing them such as many crackers, chips, cookies, cereals, and margarine. Processed soy foods are also to be avoided.

One glass of alcohol is permitted per week, preferably red wine, however ideally alcohol should be eliminated completely. Two cups of coffee are allowed daily. Stevia is the only recommended sweetener.

It is recommended to keep a food journal, which will help you identify which foods and meals make you feel good and satisfied and which don’t, so that you can fine-tune your diet.
Recommended Foods

Ideal foods will vary depending on the dieter’s metabolic type.

Some of the recommended foods include: organic meat and poultry, organic eggs, fish, raw dairy products, raw nuts and seeds, fruit, vegetables, baked sweet potatoes, coconut oil, butter, olive oil, flaxseed, avocado, sprouted breads, stevia, raw chocolate.

A supplement of omega 3 oil such as salmon, cod liver, krill or flaxseed is strongly encouraged.

Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers is one of the most consistent weight loss programs in history. Their program has helped thousands of people to lose weight, generally in a sensible way. Weight Watchers has continued to stay up-to-date offering more and more flexibility with their plans. No longer do they just run the “POINTS” system. Now with TurnAround, there are two plans to choose from: the Flexible POINTS Plan and the No Counting (or Core) Plan.

They also have an entire range of branded food products, scores of recipe and cookbooks, and even produce a magazine!

Weight Watchers latest innovation is called TurnAround™. This encompasses healthy nutrition, effective calorie control, and livability. The goal is to lose weight and keep it off.

The philosophy behind Weight Watchers believes that dieting is just one part of long-term weight management. A healthy body results in a healthy lifestyle (both mental, emotional, and physical health). They do not tell you what to eat, but provide the information, tools, and motivation to help you make good eating decisions.

Weight Watchers TurnAround™

Flex Plan

* Full range of food options using the POINTS system (the on-line program includes a complete food database for POINTS values, and a daily tracker).
* Choose any food as long as you control how much you eat.
* Learn how to easily handle any food challenge - even when choices are limited. The on-line tools include a complete database of POINTS values, and a daily tracker to keep track on daily POINTS values.

Core Plan

* Eat from a list of wholesome foods from all the food groups.
* Enjoy satisfying eating without empty calories.
* Have the occasional treat (in controlled amounts).

Medifast - Diet Review

Popular rapid weight loss program for obese people. Uses shipped pre-packaged foods.

Medifast is a low calorie diet that will bring about rapid weight loss - in the region of 2-5 pounds per week. The diet is undertaken by purchasing meal replacement products from Medifast that will provide an optimal calorie and nutrient amount for both men and women.

This Medifast plan is made up of 5 meal replacements per day (generally shakes, but there are also bars, soups, oatmeal, and puddings). In addition to the meal replacements - 1 meal per day is a “lean and green” meal - a small portion of lean meat, and generally up to 2 cups of salad or vegetables. You eat every 2-3 hours, and must drink a minimum of 64oz of fluid (water) per day.

Caloric intake is between 800-1000 calories per day. Medifast recommend having supervision from a physician - however you can order the food without this.

While there are 70 different pre-packaged foods, the most popular items are the shakes - made up of differing proportions of protein. Medifast has optimized vitamins and minerals to ensure there will be no deficiencies while reducing calorie

eDiets

eDiets is the largest online weight loss program. They have built such a large brand, that many people even think the name “e diets” is a generic term for online weight loss. Founded in 1996, they now boast over 1.3 million members. They have consistently won awards and recommendations from such prestigious publications as Time magazine, and Forbes Best of the Web.

eDiets are a subscription-based service, where the user pays quarterly. For the price you receive a number of services; customized diet and meal plans, shopping list, recipes (for whatever is on your meal plan), email assistance, and access to online tools and calculators.

eDiets underwent a major upgrade at the beginning of 2008 - unfortunately technical issues meant that there were customer service issues. These have now been rectified and the subscription process is now streamlined.
